History of 3D Mapping

draft topic outline

The 3D scene is not new. We have been sketching our world and making 3D maps for thousands of years. The 16th and 17th centuries saw rapid improvements in cartography as well as the use of 3D views - cityscapes, prospects or panoramas. These views are both artistic and geographic, they display the lay of the land, how different parts of a city are situated and identify prominent landmarks, buildings and features.

Work of Art or Scene? Many of the historic views are artistic, yet all landscape paintings are not 3D scenes. It is a mater of intent. If the artwork was intended to convey geographical information it is a scene.

Great examples are the estate paintings....
